Dear Friends,
I write you today in the waning hours of my first retirement. Starting Monday I will leave this last bastion of true
freedom known as unemployment and again enter the workforce. A year ago I was celebrating with many of you at my retirement
party in Dallas and now 28 states and 3 foreign countries later my adventure is coming to an end. It has been great to spend
some time with my family and many old friends that are scattered around the country. To my new friends who are getting back
to "reality" in their home countries, thanks for all of the good times skydiving, white water rafting, bungee jumping
and exploring.
For those of you who are wondering where in the world I ended up, the answer is Boston. I have spent a fair amount of
time here on and off over the last few months and I enjoy the city. It feels more like New York than Dallas due to the density
and need to rely on the subway to get around. But it also has a lot of natural beauty with parks, historic buildings, the
Charles river and an ocean-side setting, not to mention the proximity to good skiing. I have been staying with Allison on
the south side of the city. The neighborhood is full of colorful, narrow 3-deckers (think San Francisco) and is built on
a hill overlooking the bay. It is nice in the summer since it is just two blocks from the beach, but the 20minute walk to
the Subway gets a bit cold in the winter.
I started a job search a couple of months ago. Careful not to overexert myself with this new endeavor, I took it slow
budgeting plenty of time for sleeping in late, playing poker and taking road trips. In an effort to keep my nights and weekends
out of the hands of my employer I quickly disqualified any company that so much as mentioned the phrase "work hard, play
hard" in the interview and eventually settled on Ballentine-Finn, a wealth management firm for high net worth individuals.
I won't bore you with the details but basically the job involves managing investments for rich people.
Well now that you are all up to date on my life, please write back and tell me about yours.
Matt
